MOE and schools have vowed to 'shift' from 'rote learning' to a more creative and flexible style of learning, known as 'Teach Less, Learn More'. Under this framework, students can no longer rely on just memorising some words and phrases to do well in the Chinese exams.
Assessments now require thorough understanding of word and language use, deep understanding of the passage and critical understanding of the questions asked. Hence, logical and critical thinking skills are tested, on top of good language proficiency. Our students speak and use English most of the time nowadays. It is no wonder that they find Chinese exams hard.
However, with that in mind, Inspiren seeks to twist things around, and save Singaporean Chinese kids from this bad vicious cycle.
Having taught in MOE schools for the past 5 years, and marked the GCE-O Level Chinese exam papers and examined the oral exams, former MOE Teacher Jaye found that the most common problem amongst students is the lack of a good VOCAB BANK, PROPER GRAMMAR and SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION skills, which ARE ESSENTIAL for mastery of the exams, but cannot be drilled overnight, nor helped by last-minute intense practice.
He thus felt that need to hone these skills right from the start in Secondary One - whether for Chinese or Higher Chinese students - so that they are in good shape to tackle the rigour of the O Levels, which also test on formal articulation and critical and analytical thinking skills.
Being Singaporean and effectively bilingual,Teacher Jaye can also explain vocab and concepts clearly, in a language that is well understood by students.
At Inspiren, our Chinese Enrichment Programme / Chinese Strengthening Programme focus on changing mindsets about Chinese language and learning, adopting the right way of expression in the Chinese language, giving students a lot of exposure in practical usage like current affairs and literary texts, to spark interest, confidence and proficiency.
MINDSETS TOWARDS CHINESE LANGUAGE
We set students in the right frame of mind, to adopt postive attitudes towards learning from the onset, so that they are 'in tune' with what we are teaching.
GRAMMAR & NUANCES TRAINING
We take time to imbue a correct understanding of Chinese grammar and nuances of different word uses and contexts, so they are not confused when seeing them in different places.
VOCABULARY & SENTENCE STRUCTURES
We make effort to drill vocabulary, phrases and sentence structures in our students, so they strengthen word recognition and have enough fortitude to handle essays.
CURRENT AFFAIRS & PRACTICAL USAGE
We expose them to a wide range of literary work and news commentary so that they are both in tune with practical Chinese usage, and with the latest current affairs.
EXAM SKILLS & TECHNIQUES
While building all the relevant language and content foundation, we also teach specific answering tactics to tackle and ace the examinations so they can perform well in the battleground.

2. At our centre, which is newly furbished (wholly renovated with brand new desks, chairs and cabinets) and fully equipped with the latest technologies like video projectors and sound system, we can provide the most conducive environment for learning and language practice.
3. Travelling to a centre also adds to the sense of purpose and discipline in maintaining good order and punctuality, as well as attentiveness and participation.
4. The community environment also encourages peer learning, interaction and improvement.
